Yep, I definitely borked my Windows install, and I'm pretty sure I know where and how I did it, but it's impossible to repair at this point. At this rate, I may just wipe my entire partition table, go buy Vista Ultimate at some online OEM store, and do it that way. Or I could just steal Erin's XP CD, but I don't know if Dell has XP drivers for my machine. I guess that can be my research project for the next few days.

Parking last night took me about an hour. Not so fun, but that's what Carroll Gardens parking is.

Sometimes while driving I am shocked at how intuitive it is. It becomes like my forms, where if I think about it while doing it, I think I'm doing everything wrong, and am about to fix it, when I realize I was doing the right thing the whole time, and the correction is the error. This seems to especially happen to me when I check my right mirror. No, I don't know why.

Also, driving for about 2 hours hurts my right knee, right below (not under) the kneecap. Does this happen to anyone else? When it happens to me, it feels like doing a quadriceps stretch would fix it, but it doesn't get fixed this way, just walking on it eventually works it out.

So when I go to the following link, I see the following:
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

In fact, all PNGs are fucked up. I've re-emerged libpng, restarted X, and screamed at my computer.

WTF do I do now?

They're doing work on my test bench at work so I cannot perform any more tests at this time...

∴ webcomics!

I read all of Perry Bible Fellowship again, and just now, a softer world. The latter is usually far too pretentious for my taste, but these two comics are interesting to me for some reasons that you should know: a giant overthrowing the paradigm.

The consequence is that I tend to look at my IMs and forming them into weird pseudo-poetic things in the same style as ASW:
"Be good to yourself"
she says.
But all I want
is for others to
follow her advice

So I'm getting a new nearly sub-notebook in a few days. It comes with Vista, which I'll be keeping on it, just in case Spore ever actually comes out, but the rest of the time, I'll be using Linux. The laptop will have WiFi and Bluetooth, and I've found that there are very few good graphical programs for managing either, and all only work in the major Desktop Environments (KDE and Gnome). So, even though I'm getting used to Gnome at work (thanks Fedora Core, in your RPM muck), I'm thinking of going the KDE route. And I'm thinking, therefore, of going with Kubuntu for no-configuration Debian-derivative joy. However, I am very open to whichever distro can make suspend-to-disk easy and work with most (preferably my) laptops. Any suggestions? I have experience with Slackware, Gentoo (most recently and most in-depth), and a little bit of Debian. Sabayon (and the fact that it's Gentoo-derived) interests me, but I'm concerned the stock Intel video card will not be up to the task. I suppose for that last bit I can try the live CD out.

A great explination of what the Loudness Wars are doing to music. Remember to scroll to the bottom to see what it would look like if the same thing happened to the art world.

I think I should start keeping a little journal book because I think of things I want to put on LJ on the train (while I'm reading about TCP/IP) and I never remember what they are.

[livejournal.com profile] shoujo_mallet hates the download manager in Firefox. I have worked out how to disable it:
  1. Go to about:config
  2. Search for "download"
  3. Set browser.download.manager.closeWhenDone to true
  4. Set browser.download.manager.showWhenStarting to false

Yes, I know steps 3 and 4 may be a little redundant, but it never hurts to double-check your work.

Put in your .screenrc file the following line:
termcap linux XT:true
Which tells screen that any terminal identifying itself as "linux" (which is the default setting for PuTTY) has XTerm capabilities. If your system uses terminfo instead of termcap, you can use the "terminfo" command instead. Or even better, you (and probably I [actually, that's what I'm doing now]) could use "termcapinfo" which covers all your bases so you may best move your zig.

HOPE 6

So I know I haven't posted since I moved, but I'm not going to post about it yet.

HOPE is fun. Thus far I've:
  • Listened to talks on:
    • "Hacking the Palate" (food)
    • Hacking Sex
      • although I'd heard all the stuff before via my own studies as well as TES
    • Tor
      • although I feel I helped to give this talk instead
    • Community radio
    • Wireless security and link maintainance
    • The current political situation, and how the gov't should spend more money on "Open Source Security"
  • Met MC Frontalot (yet again) and promised him that I'd be at his show tonight. You should come too!
    • 9 pm at Club Midway at 25 Avenue B.
  • Messed with the dumb terminals that someone brought over. Did not manage to get more than one working (and that one worked because it had a ROM chip that the others didn't)
    • They were messed up because the ROM images supplied (for PXE boot) were corrupt. But one of them could boot into X, and I was one of the few people borking on it that knew how to xforward.
  • Bought 3 T-shirts
    • The HOPE 6 shirt
    • An MC Frontalot Nerdcore Rising Tour shirt
    • A babydoll tee that says "The Internet is a Series of Tubes" with an illustration of a uterus (including ovaries and fallopian tubes).
      • Needless to say, that last one's for Erin
  • QSO'ed with the special event call sign N6H. I'm going to try to ping them from here when I'm done with my shower.
  • Ran into a couple I met at the Pride Parade
Any questions? Ask.

Previously, on my LJ...:
OK, I am registering now because I want to go to HOPE 6 regardless of who comes. That said, Who's muthafukin' comin?

HOPE Number Six:
Anyone want to come with me?

Wow, I managed to fuck this one up good.

I turned off my light to go to sleep, and I didn't realize that my computer was plugged into the same socket, causing it to completely discharge. And the keyboard problems have actually managed to get worse. "Up" keeps getting triggered when I hold down "w" or "s" which I have to do to be able to type them. And I have trouble clicking and dragging. The arrow keys do not work reliably at all.

Maybe I can try to remove the keyboard when I get home...

Well. That's one way to drop my email backlog to 2 days. Lose all my email from before then.

So who are you, primo.rh.rit.edu?

And how interesting to see that you are running RealVNC and kept the java applet open. ;-) [No, I did not, nor will I, (genuinely) attempt to use this information to my benefit/amusement.]
xoder: (A DeLorean?!?)
I got free Opera. You can, too, if you hurry.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Anyone know more about Windows than I do? The LAN connection on top is currently streaming music from my room. (The free as in beer wifi is not accepting connections from either myself or my brother's computer. With a little more work, I suppose I could MAC-spoof, but that feels dangerously close to the darker of the two hats, so I will leave it be, as it seems to go out on weekends and is returned during the week.) The bottom graph is the one I'm weirded out by. I'm saturating the pipe, right (at 2.x k :-(), but every minute or so, the downloads halt for 2-3 seconds. This is a regular pattern. Very strange. BTW, stopping the stream from downstairs did nothing to stem the evil stoppages.

So, when Naruto doesn't air, Dattebayo releases a [YHBT] fake. This week's starts with the current Naruto Opener, and follows with this movie classic and internet phenomenon. [Link is not really NSFW, as it is to IMDB, but title is... racy.] Now I know that I can watch it and join the fan organization [This is a bit more NSFW, its a /. troll site].

My phone works again! Its clock is wrong, but it works. That means I can go back to fantasizing about spending money on fun things, like LCD screens and 2+ GiB thumb drives.

EDIT: Nope. Still randomly does weird shit. Am browsing phones. Will consider which ones to get after I fix/throw money at Erin's computer.

So, I'm thinking of picking up some free webhosting, but I still need to decide what to do with it, and also whether or not I can afford to perform the necessary post count to keep the account (the TOS doesn't specify). And music is forbidden from the host which is totally annoying if I, say, wanted to redistribute some Open music there, or something. OTOH, it will give me a chance to get some experimentation with web programming with MySQL. Anyways, they have cpanel, which makes backups trivial, and I have some experience with working on that with Onenpbqn, back in the day.

Note to self: wmDrawer for my fluxbox install whenever I start actively using it and the internets again.
