I remember you told me that there was a driving school on 116th and 8th. I was just by there yesterday and didn't see anything. Did I perhaps mess up the directions or something?
Broadway Auto School (http://www.villagevoice.com/nycguide/ve11832,4.html). The Voice's link to their site is out of date, and I don't have the flier on me right now (and the link on the business card I picked up this morning is dead), but yes, I would recommend them. They've got some great package deals (which are on that flier I don't have here at work) and all the instructors are very personable. It's something of a small operation. The 5-hr class was very fun, although replete with the requisite scare-mongering. I only took one ride out with a driving instructor (I've been practicing a while now), and the guy was very helpful and attentive. I got to take the test in the same car I practiced in, which while not necessary (one of the teachers said, "You can only drive in one car? You can't drive!"), was very comfortable.
Truth be told, though, I found them solely through the yellow pages (online, of course, but still).
PS: My name is Peter, and when I get excited I become a parentheses addict.
I recall my driving school (but not the name) and it was good times. He (forgot his name too) was really laid back (probably because he's a physical education teacher and part time driving lessons instructor) and barely ever seemed to criticize.
I think in the end I learned more from driving on my own with a permit (or by acquiring my parents car and going to a nearby parking lot) than I ever did from any driving instructor, though.

It's funny when applying for car insurance, they always ask, "How long have you been driving." Never, "How long have you been driving a car?"
Congratulations nonetheless, you are one step closer to driving a pimp-mobile!
