I don't believe the internet necessarily makes it easier to stay in contact with people, it just creates more immediately gratifying means of communication provided that you can make the time to use it (which many of us fail to do in todays high speed no vacation American way of life - see USA today from the last couple of days - average US vacation days - 14 rest of the world 24 and up). And I think they said we work the most hours in a day as well (or close to it).
OK personal opinions/beliefs aside. I recommend doing it the old fashioned way. Pick up the phone and call them. It worked before the internet I don't see why it can't work now. Also, now you can pick up the phone from anywhere, so not being at home isn't even an issue. :)
