Regarding some of the recent drama in [livejournal.com profile] rit.

My mom's a smart woman. She's not prejudiced with regards to anything (which comes in handy, being a judge), so far as I know. But she doesn't pretend that everyone's the same, or equally qualified.

Once she told me of how Hispanic parents are using ESL classes to teach their American-born children Spanish so they could communicate. And we were both revulsed.

"Welcome to America, learn English," she said. That was what her relatives had to do, even when it was NINA everywhere, her Italian relatives learned English and did the best they could.

We both mourned the loss of the classic New York "Walk/Don't Walk" signs as they were replaced by the LED-lit iconographs.

Very very strongly agreed on the last point.

I did pick up one of the old signs while they were being replaced as a permanent memorial.
