As discovered, your "English" pancakes came from an abnormal recipe for them. Other recipes do not include the heavy cream. Additionally, we've also established that the batter was not spread enough resulting especially goo-filled cake.
There is a difference between English and American pancakes, or so the recipes would indicate, but I've yet to see what it is.
