Keeping the same schedule on weekends will help you become more comfortable with the pattern, and will reduce sleep deprivation. Whether you think it's worth it is a different question.

Another option to consider, depending upon your actual schedule during the day, is to not wake at 5:40, but instead stay up all night, go to work or whatever during the morning, go to bed at noon, wake at 8pm, and then stay awake through whatever it is you do in the morning. A schedule like this worked well for a friend who worked 11pm-7am. He went to bed every day at 8am and woke at 4pm, hung out with friends for dinner and the evening, and then went to work.
