I just bought my new computer bits.

Athlon 64 3400+, 1GiB DDR3200 RAM, 250 GB HDD, 16x DVD+/-/DL burner, GeForce 5200 w/ 128MiB DDR VRAM

Muahahahahhahaha!

Ed, Tom, could one or both of you give me some tips on partition allocation in Gentoo?

By the way, jerkface, here's my setup, with a 200GB drive:

10gb /
80gb /usr
20gb /opt
80gb /home
10gb /var -- lots of gentoo code and tarballs get dumped in /var by default

Cheers.

Or maybe Peter's very forgetful.

Oh, and maybe he'd like someone local, should anything go terrifically pear-shaped.

Regardless, your opinions are welcome as well!

ummm... I'll have a look at the breakdown of space usage next time I'm in linux. er, remind me.

(the cat5 jacks on Library4 don't work, so I'm in winxp for the wireless)

Trust me, I won't notice. I've been living with a 16MiB Rage 128 All In Wonder for the past 7 years. I will drool like I have not drooled since the n64. (Anyways, that's what Birthdays and Christmases are for!)

Nice.

But for all that, did you go SATA and at least raid 0?

But I did!

Athlon 64 3500+ (Winchester core), 1 GB DDR400(PC3200), Abit AV8, Geforce 6800, 600GB of SATA RAID 0 (+ 100GB of boring normal IDE storage).

*grin*

The mobo supports it (which for some reason I missed when I was shopping), I'll just take care of it later as an upgrade. SATA drives have to drop in price at some point, right?

I paid $190 apiece for the two Maxtor 300GB drives. Both 7200rpm with 16mb cache.

Very nice. I eagerly await the price drops to come (frankly, I don't have $400 to drop on storage right now)
