What is the most equitable solution for the remaining roomies if one is forced out for nonpayment?

What are the terms of the lease that you established amongst your tenants? Are you the only one on the main lease with the building? Or is everyone?

If everyone is, said person is responsible for their rent. If they refuse to pay it, then you and every other lessee is responsible for paying the extra money until you find a new tenant to occupy the room. If it's just you on the main building lease, then really, you're responsible for the extra rent. Hopefully everyone will be understanding until the situation is resolved.

And also, if you're on the main building lease and your roommates aren't and you don't have a lease written up by you for them, it's time to write a roommate lease. You need to protect yourself in these situations.

The situation really sucks and I hope you're able to resolve it.

*hugs*
