Have I been exerting inordinate control over someone I care very much about because of my own very strong prejudices. Should I allow them to make their own mistakes even though they already have, and I don't want them to fall back into...

What the fuck? How could I have gotten into the habit of talking to that person this way and not realized how it must seem to them. Me, the same old patronizing asshole that I hate.

Effectiveness of your own approach aside, is it not a greater sign of love to humbly aid your loved ones in avoiding damaging mistakes than to say it's none of your business and leave them to their own devices?
