So now it has come time to consider:

Have I been exerting inordinate control over someone I care very much about because of my own very strong prejudices. Should I allow them to make their own mistakes even though they already have, and I don't want them to fall back into...

What the fuck? How could I have gotten into the habit of talking to that person this way and not realized how it must seem to them. Me, the same old patronizing asshole that I hate.

Back to reading.

Effectiveness of your own approach aside, is it not a greater sign of love to humbly aid your loved ones in avoiding damaging mistakes than to say it's none of your business and leave them to their own devices?

I have no idea what this is about, and I'm not going to ask, and unless you want to tell me, you won't.. but I WILL say that you're definitely not an asshole. *superhugs*

[livejournal.com profile] ricewrites is right, you're not an asshole, but it sure can be tough not to sound that way when the other person doesn't want to hear what you need to say.

and I agree with [livejournal.com profile] codepoet, sometimes it really is best to help show people where mistakes are by helping them step around them. unfortunately, you can't always do that :(

so, I'd say, try to help a brotha' out, but be careful about your tone of voice and choice of words.
